New Pools & Pool Houses » Planning Your New Pool

Design Considerations

The design of your pool will be affected by personal considerations combined with natural and technical factors. Once the decision is made to build a pool, the next important decision is for the owner to develop a clear understanding of how the pool will be used.

How you and your family will use the pool are personal considerations that are factored into the design. Are you building the pool to swim laps or for family fun? Does the family have children? Will the pool be used for diving? Are you planning to include a spa?

Natural factors include the size and shape of your lot. The terrain of your lot and the maximum sun angle are also important natural factors.

Technical factors include whether your home is on a sewer line or septic tank. The location of easements and rights-of-way (both above and below ground) for gas, water, phone and electric service must also be considered.

Special Water Features

Today's pool owner has many choices in the way they can customize their pool. Aside from basic design considerations that include the shape and size of the pool and style of decking, owners can incorporate a spa (hot tub), special lighting effects and underwater benches.

The choice is yours though it is very important for you to know upfront what you want to spend on the pool and the purposes it will serve. For example, a pool designed for a refreshing dip on a hot summer day has different requirements than a pool for swimming laps.
